Develop Methods to Prevent and Control Spontaneous Combustion Associated With Mining and Subsidence

2003

Fourth year of work at South African collieries, using borehole and infrared temperature monitoring, moisture testing and sealing trials, with control measures for opencast and underground operations.

What this report found

No standard technique for predicting, controlling or extinguishing spontaneous combustion emerged, and the methods in use proved expensive and not routinely successful. Because every mine differs, the work sets out a sequence of locating the fire, assessing the risk, choosing a strategy and method, then monitoring it. Separate control measures are given for old workings, exposed coal and spoil heaps.

A diatom based index for pans impacted by acid mine drainage

2021

Wet and dry season sampling of epiphytic diatoms from reed, salt and grass pans on the Mpumalanga Highveld, validating a biomonitoring index for mine affected depressional wetlands.

What this report foundLevel of acid mine drainage disturbance explained more of the variation in diatom communities than any other factor, with pan type second and season not...

What this report found

Level of acid mine drainage disturbance explained more of the variation in diatom communities than any other factor, with pan type second and season not significant. Sulphate and calcium concentrations and sulphate to chloride ratios were higher in disturbed pans of every type. Pan type specific indices were tested against established riverine indices.

Development of a Horizontal Winnower for the Beneficiation of Fine Coal

Proof of concept work on dry beneficiation of minus 6 mm coal, combining airflow modelling and simulation with a laboratory winnowing box, for plants short of process water.

What this report found

Horizontal air winnowing separated fine coal by particle size and density in laboratory experiments, supported by equation of motion modelling and computational fluid dynamics. Modelling indicated that a chamber 0.6 m high and 1 m long is sufficient to displace any minus 6 mm particle at air velocities of 10 to 30 m/s.
