What this report found

Ground based radar mapped rehabilitation soil profiles well enough to replace much of the auger sampling normally needed, and a 100 MHz system picked out anomalies at about 5 to 6 m depth that were likely old mining voids and related subsidence. Penetration below roughly 6 m needs lower frequencies, which cost resolution and require larger antennas.

They differ from profit sharing and pension arrangements in holding only the employer's own equity and in enlarging the company's capacity to borrow. Acceptance of such schemes in the South African mining industry was tested through an attitude survey of workers.

Rehabilitated opencast soils carried pastures and cash crops, but compaction and cover soil depth set the ceiling on what they could produce. Only land with deep cover soils suited maize and sunflower, and deep ripping with regular tillage was needed. Bulk density standards were not met at the trial sites, which the review judged enough to have changed the results.
