Pilot trial on single stage reverse osmosis brine at a Mpumalanga power station treating acid drainage from a neighbouring colliery, with projections for the planned second stage.
Ion exchange converted reverse osmosis brine from a power station treating colliery water and cooling tower blowdown into fertiliser and explosives salts, with no liquid effluent left to dispose of. Part of the water rejected by the reverse osmosis stage was also recovered as potable water. Brine is currently used for dust suppression and stored underground.

Flotation with an emulsion binder did not raise those concentrations in either the product or the tailings streams. Calcination did, lifting totals to between 285 and 289 ppm, with most rare earths leaching within the first fifteen minutes.
