Hydrothermal Treatment of Coal Discards and Sewage Sludge for the Production of Advanced Materials

What this report found

Co-treating coal discards with sewage sludge by hydrothermal carbonisation gave hydrochars with better physicochemical properties than treating either waste alone. The blended hydrochar reached a surface area of 20.35 m2/g and a pore volume of 0.38 cm3/g, and removed 97.19% of nevirapine and 93.32% of lamivudine from recycled water. Routes to activated carbon and hydrogen storage were also assessed.

Description

The disposal of coal discards (CD) and sewage sludge (SS) is a substantial problem to waste management in coal beneficiation and wastewater treatment plants (WWT). This work investigates essential aspects for contributing to the reduction of environmental effects, with a particular emphasis on the hydrothermal carbonization technology for the synergetic treatment of CD and SS to produce value-added carbonaceous materials. When compared to the individual treatment of CD and SS, the Co-hydrothermal carbonization method improved the physicochemical attributes of the produced hydrochars (HC). The produced HCs could be suitable for a wide range of potential applications i.e., soil amendment, WWT, production of activated carbon.

Satellite thermal bands give a regional picture only; detailed mapping of coal fires or acid drainage discharge needs high resolution aerial surveys.
