What this report found

No single global standard governs refuge bay design, and the collieries surveyed differ widely in construction, location, equipment and operating practice, which made ranking them impractical. Areas needing attention were identified in design, construction and maintenance of the facilities that keep people alive until rescue, drawn against local law and overseas practice.

What this report found

Ion exchange applied to brine from a three stage reverse osmosis plant at eMalahleni converted the brine entirely into saleable fertiliser and explosives feedstock, and recovered close to half of the water the reverse osmosis stage leaves behind. On this basis the existing brine pond and the two planned for the plant expansion would not be needed.
