Detection of Old Workings

M van Schoo r

Review of earlier geophysical work plus literature, setting out method selection and test site requirements ahead of field trials, for engineers assessing undermined ground before development.

by M van Schoor | February 2008

What this report found

Microgravity, resistivity based methods including self potential, and time domain electromagnetics are identified as able to detect and delineate shallow old workings, with controlled source audio magnetotellurics useful below about 30 metres. How well each performs depends on target depth, the material filling the void and the overburden, and has never been quantified. Field trials were planned to close that gap.

What this report found

A pilot brine concentrator treated Stage 3 reject effluent from a mine water reclamation plant, raising total dissolved solids from 24 g/L to 154 g/L at 88 per cent water recovery. The condensate met the national potable water specification. A separate run concentrated brine from 76 g/L to 145 g/L, solid salts were precipitated, and no scaling or fouling was seen.
