Growth Potential of Kenaf on Coal Tailings in South Africa

Bianca Boshoff

2025

This research investigates the physiological performance of kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus) when grown in coal tailings—an area where limited studies exist, especially within the South African context. North West University

Real-time Plant Efficiency Measurement

GJ de Korte

2002

Assessment of the measurement and control equipment available to coal preparation plants, with recommendations for plant metallurgists on which instruments to add first.

What this report foundNo single method gives a continuous, real time report on how a coal preparation plant is performing.

What this report found

No single method gives a continuous, real time report on how a coal preparation plant is performing. Mass meters converted to yield values, on-line ash and moisture monitors, load cell chutes and automatic medium density control together supply most of what is needed. Measuring discard and slimes tonnages, particularly slimes disposal, remains the weakest point in plant accounting.

Spontaneous Combustion of Coal and Coal-shales

2018

Laboratory testing of samples from South African collieries using two Wits self-heating indices alongside proximate and ultimate analysis, for ventilation and safety engineers assessing burning shale risk.

What this report found

Testing of 28 coal and coal-shale samples showed the coals to be more liable to spontaneous combustion than the shales, though reactive coal-shales still self-heat and pyrite in them speeds the process. Higher carbon, moisture, hydrogen, volatile matter and nitrogen with lower ash all raised proneness to self-heating, so proximate and ultimate analysis can serve as a screening tool.

Review of Current and Expected Underground Coal Mining Methods and an Evaluation of the Best Practices Associated with These

André William Dougall

2010

Review of underground coal production systems in South Africa set against practice in Australia, China and the United States, with guidance on equipment choice and section planning.

What this report found

South African underground sections average about 60 000 t a month, against 130 000 to 160 000 t for single pass bolter miner units on continuous haulage, while the better sections target 1.4 to 1.6 Mt a year. Australian longwalls deliver 5 to 7 Mt a year from one face, compared with 3 to 5 Mt at the two local wall operations.
