DyVar Pilot Test Report

Tecroveer

Batch pilot trial of a salt concentration unit on saline coal mine effluent at the eMalahleni reclamation plant, for mines weighing brine treatment and salt recovery.

What this report found

A pilot brine concentrator treated Stage 3 reject effluent from a mine water reclamation plant, raising total dissolved solids from 24 g/L to 154 g/L at 88 per cent water recovery. The condensate met the national potable water specification. A separate run concentrated brine from 76 g/L to 145 g/L, solid salts were precipitated, and no scaling or fouling was seen.

A manual for authorisation of pitlakes as a closure option for South African coal mines

2021

A practical guide for coal mines and their consultants, built on earlier water research on pitlake viability, with South African examples from the Highveld, Waterberg and KwaZulu-Natal coal fields.

What this report found

Sets out the authorisation route for leaving a pitlake as a closure landform, covering water use licensing, environmental authorisation and the wider legislative process. There is no single application that grants approval, and the route is long and partly duplicated, so several applications are required.

Economic Coal Resources of the Highveld, Ermelo, South Rand and Sasolburg-vereeniging Coalfields

What this report found

A rating and ranking system was applied to South African coalfields and, separately, to the coal bearing countries elsewhere in the Southern African Development Community. The Waterberg ranked highest in South Africa and is the coalfield most worth detailed investigation as Witbank output declines. Botswana ranked highest among the other member states on contained resources and exploitation potential.

Application of Earth ion Exchange Technology to Convert Acid Mine Drainage from Kilbarchan Colliery into Saleable Products

EARTH

2010

Pilot scale ion exchange trial on acid drainage pumped from a closed colliery in KwaZulu-Natal, for mine water managers weighing alternatives to reverse osmosis.

EARTH

What this report found

Ion exchange treatment of acid mine drainage from a closed KwaZulu-Natal colliery was piloted and shown to give effluent free processing, converting the salts into saleable products rather than sludge and brine. Reverse osmosis had previously produced water of discharge standard but left both. Combined flow from the two mine compartments averaged 4.6 megalitres a day.

Soil Rehabilitation: Can Dung Beetles Improve Post-mining Land-use Options?

2018

Final report of a three year study on rehabilitated South African coal mine soils, testing an invertebrate based addition to conventional rehabilitation, for environmental managers and land use planners.

What this report foundAnts, termites, dung beetles and earthworms are known to improve soil health, but none had been deliberately applied as part of a mine reclamation strategy.

What this report found

Ants, termites, dung beetles and earthworms are known to improve soil health, but none had been deliberately applied as part of a mine reclamation strategy. Experimental and field scale studies asked whether dung beetles maintain their burial activity, and the soil services that follow, in soils typical of rehabilitated mine land, and set out recommendations for using them alongside existing methods.
