Description
Mintek’s cloSURETM technology has been specifically developed for mine sites post-closure and would be suitable for implementation at sites with low or unpredictable flow, at remote locations and in areas lacking services/infrastructure. The two- stage process, consisting of a bioreduction followed by a bio-oxidation step, is intended to produce water that is fit for re-use, specifically in irrigated agriculture. The objective is to reduce the cost of mine water treatment, and to create the opportunity for revenue generation through the re-use of the water to produce crops, and possibly through the production of a bio-sulphur product.

Monitoring and geochemical modelling at five pilot sites, on undisturbed soils and on opencast spoils, showed that most soils held a large share of the applied salt in the upper unsaturated zone and that salinity built up slowly. Leachate volumes, leachate quality and aquifer mixing ratios were quantified. Irrigation is recommended on alternating pivots and for no longer than ten years in one area.
