Update of Coal Pillar Data Base, Strength Formula and Probability of Failure for South African Coal Mining
Reviews how the failed and intact pillar record, tributary area loading and the safety factor concept have developed since 1960, for rock engineers and regulators.
by J N van der Merwe & M Mathey | March 2012
Failures continued after the safety factor approach was adopted, in pillars created both before and after it, so the record of failed workings has kept growing since the original 27 cases. The database was updated and re-analysed to revise the strength formula and to set out the probability of failure associated with pillar designs.

BCI Chemical Research & Analysis – ion Exchange
2012
Global, regional and South African market analysis of ion exchange resins as applied to mine waste brine, including a United States pilot plant, for technology and investment decisions.
What this report foundIon exchange was assessed as a treatment route for brine arising from mine water cleaning, from a market rather than a plant performance standpoint.

Ion exchange was assessed as a treatment route for brine arising from mine water cleaning, from a market rather than a plant performance standpoint. World demand for ion exchange resins was expected to pass 535 million dollars by 2015, driven by urbanisation, pollution and shortages of clean water in developing regions.
The impact of cattle grazing on rehabilitated land
Two annual surveys of species composition, biomass and soil sampling inside and outside fenced plots on rehabilitated pasture at an opencast colliery near Ogies, with benchmark sites for comparison.
What this report foundGrazing pressure on the rehabilitated block ran at roughly three times the estimated carrying capacity.

Grazing pressure on the rehabilitated block ran at roughly three times the estimated carrying capacity. The sward was dominated by low quality grasses with a high proportion of bare ground and a raised erosion risk. Fenced exclosures over one year changed the abundance of a few species, but the vegetation showed no clear direction of recovery.
