Field trials established on prepared topsoil at three Mpumalanga Highveld collieries and measured to 2007, covering survival, cover, biomass and tree growth, for rehabilitation planners.
Cynodon dactylon outperformed Themeda triandra and Hyparrhenia hirta, reaching 100 per cent survival and cover at all three trial sites by 2007 with or without fertiliser. Acacia sieberana reached 97 per cent survival at Kleinkopje Colliery but grew poorly at Optimum and Syferfontein. Planting plugs suits slopes too steep for a planter machine and buffers against pasture grass intrusion.

Plagioclase textures indicate fractionation at different depths in the crust for the Witbank and Sasolburg intrusions, and the olivine content points to separate magma sources for two of the sills. Fine crystalline dolerite, including chilled margins and bifurcations, alters most readily.
