Wetlands Inventory of Upper Olifants River Catchment
Catchment wide wetland inventory spanning parts of Mpumalanga and Gauteng, artificial wetlands included, with attributes on type, function and status for environmental planners.

A digital wetland map and linked database were compiled for the Upper Olifants River Catchment from existing literature, existing wetland layers and aerial photography. Wetlands cover about 2 147 km2, some 14 per cent of the 15 158 km2 catchment. The wetland layer is about 70 per cent accurate and its attributes about 60 per cent, so it suits baseline screening rather than site assessment.

Aircraft and ground based measurements at Kleinkopje Colliery showed spontaneous combustion to be a significant source of fine particles, with PM2.5 concentrations 91 per cent higher inside a combustion plume than outside it. Sulphur dioxide, nitrogen dioxide and carbon dioxide were also raised in plume, and benzene and toluene were detected. Average particle size was below one micron.

Micro-gravity, electrical resistivity and time domain electromagnetics located the boundary between old workings and virgin ground, but no ground technique tested could resolve individual bords and pillars at the depths typical of the Witbank and Highveld coalfields. Airborne thermal infrared surveys worked well as a low cost regional reconnaissance tool for shallow sinkholes, fires and possible pollution plumes.
