Assessing the Ecosystem Processes of Ecological Infrastructure on Post-coal Mined Land

2017

Physical, chemical and biological sampling at two points on each of four Mpumalanga watercourses, with wetland functionality assessment and mitigation recommendations, for mine environmental and water managers.

What this report foundWatercourses on post mined land near Kriel showed deterioration in manganese, calcium, magnesium, sodium, total dissolved salts and sulphate, while other...

What this report found

Watercourses on post mined land near Kriel showed deterioration in manganese, calcium, magnesium, sodium, total dissolved salts and sulphate, while other parameters stayed within drinking water standards. Aquatic invertebrate communities had suffered significant losses and two sites were classified as eutrophic. The water is not fit for human consumption or recreation, and a minimum 32 m buffer from wetland boundaries is recommended after earthworks.

BCI Chemical Research & Analysis – Calcium & Magnesium

Jacques Magliolo

2012

Desk research on two mine water by products, closing out the economic analysis behind proposed brine treatment plants, for readers judging whether recovered salts can be sold.

What this report foundPrices for calcium and magnesium sulphate are recorded for South Africa and for world markets as at mid 2012, together with price trends and the groundwater...

What this report found

Prices for calcium and magnesium sulphate are recorded for South Africa and for world markets as at mid 2012, together with price trends and the groundwater chemistry that governs which salts a mine water stream will yield. The figures were assembled to support feasibility studies on a eutectic freeze crystallisation plant and an ion exchange plant.

Institutional, Legal & Financial Aspects of Regional Mine Water Collection, Treatment and Re-use

2004

Review of ownership models, licensing and funding for a shared regional mine water treatment scheme on the Mpumalanga coalfields, written for mine managers and water regulators.

What this report found

A regional scheme to collect, treat and re-use mine water in the Upper Olifants River Catchment has merit, with the mines best placed to start it through a dedicated mine water company that brings in the water services authorities. Water legislation supports the scheme provided the regulator allocates mine water as a resource. Viability rests on the tariffs mines and water users pay.

Development of Design Procedures for Long Slender Pillars

2005

Design guidance for rib pillars, built from back analysed in situ coal tests and two dimensional modelling rather than empirical data, for rock engineers laying out high extraction panels.

What this report foundNumerical modelling produced upper and lower bound strength formulae for rib pillars, the lower bound covering weak roof and floor contacts.

What this report found

Numerical modelling produced upper and lower bound strength formulae for rib pillars, the lower bound covering weak roof and floor contacts. The formulae apply between width to height ratios of 0.5 and 2.5, with linear interpolation below that, and give conservative designs above 3. Adjustments were suggested where regular joint sets occur.
