BCI Chemical Research & Analysis – Potassium & Sodium

Jacques Magliolo

Chemical market survey commissioned to price the by products of brine treatment, covering South African and global price levels for five salts and the sector outlook at the time.

What this report found

Market prices are set out for sodium sulphate, sodium chloride, sodium nitrate, potassium nitrate and potassium chloride, in South Africa and abroad, as at early 2011, with Chinese supplier quotes alongside United States averages. The work was done to test whether salts recovered from mine water brine could be sold at a worthwhile price.

Determination of the Impact of Coal Mine Water Irrigation on Groundwater Resources

2007

Groundwater investigation behind mine water irrigation in the Mpumalanga coalfields, with hydraulic testing, leaching studies and site selection and monitoring guidance for mines and regulators.

What this report found

Monitoring and geochemical modelling at five pilot sites, on undisturbed soils and on opencast spoils, showed that most soils held a large share of the applied salt in the upper unsaturated zone and that salinity built up slowly. Leachate volumes, leachate quality and aquifer mixing ratios were quantified. Irrigation is recommended on alternating pivots and for no longer than ten years in one area.

Determine Possible Means to Conduct Large Scale Frictional Ignitions Tests, and the Value of These to Coaltech

T F Ngobeni

2017

A scoping exercise based on technical enquiries to mine safety organisations and discussions at an international conference, aimed at rock engineers and safety practitioners weighing test facility investment.

What this report found

No operating full scale frictional ignition test facility was found anywhere in the world, and building one was judged expensive, impractical and unlikely to justify its cost against laboratory scale testing. Effort should instead go to small scale laboratory equipment using South African rocks, and to expanding geological data such as silica distribution and petrographic analysis.

Project 8.3.3 – Framework to Guide Mine-related Land Use Planning Towards Optimisation of the Coal Mining Rehabilitated Landscape

Raina Hattingh

2018

Masters research combining a review of rehabilitation guidance with South African industry interviews, for mine planners and regulators deciding what post mining land should become after closure.

What this report found

A framework for planning land use on rehabilitated coal mining land, built from a review of international and national regulatory and corporate guidance and from interviews with industry practitioners. The review found that existing guidance requires land to be returned as close as possible to its pre mining condition, while community needs are pushing rehabilitation towards alternative land uses that can sustain livelihoods.
