No single method gives a continuous, real time report on how a coal preparation plant is performing. Mass meters converted to yield values, on-line ash and moisture monitors, load cell chutes and automatic medium density control together supply most of what is needed. Measuring discard and slimes tonnages, particularly slimes disposal, remains the weakest point in plant accounting.

How it opens
When reference is made to the efficiency of a coal preparation plant or a specific coal processing unit, the sharpness of separation is usually inferred. The sharpness of separation reflects the ability of a unit, such as a dense-medium cyclone, to selectively separate coal and non-coal particles from each other based on the difference in their relative densities.
