Agricultural Research on Rehabilitated Coal Mined Land (1994-2001) Conducted in Terms of the Kraai Van Niekerk Report
Consolidated review of six field studies on highveld opencast rehabilitation, covering soil profiles, pasture performance, crop potential and soil water, for mine environmental staff and regulators.
Rehabilitated opencast soils carried pastures and cash crops, but compaction and cover soil depth set the ceiling on what they could produce. Only land with deep cover soils suited maize and sunflower, and deep ripping with regular tillage was needed. Bulk density standards were not met at the trial sites, which the review judged enough to have changed the results.

Audit and Diagnostic Assessment of Productivity in Continuous Miner Sections
2003
Mine level study of the human and social influences on continuous miner section output, using interviews, focus groups, observation and work study at participating collieries, for mine managers.
What this report foundSection performance was limited by the will and motivation of the workforce, not by equipment, layout or technical competence, all of which were found sound.

Section performance was limited by the will and motivation of the workforce, not by equipment, layout or technical competence, all of which were found sound. Team based bonus payments were the strongest motivator and reinforced cooperation across shifts and functions, but dependence on bonus income to meet monthly expenses turned it into a source of stress. Recognition in front of colleagues and family motivated strongly.
Development of Design Procedures for Long Slender Pillars
2005
Design guidance for rib pillars, built from back analysed in situ coal tests and two dimensional modelling rather than empirical data, for rock engineers laying out high extraction panels.
What this report foundNumerical modelling produced upper and lower bound strength formulae for rib pillars, the lower bound covering weak roof and floor contacts.
R1500,00
Numerical modelling produced upper and lower bound strength formulae for rib pillars, the lower bound covering weak roof and floor contacts. The formulae apply between width to height ratios of 0.5 and 2.5, with linear interpolation below that, and give conservative designs above 3. Adjustments were suggested where regular joint sets occur.
Simulation of Regional Collapses in Bord & Pillar Workings
2018
Three dimensional modelling of a documented subsidence event in the Witbank coalfield, aimed at reserves in the seam above old workings that current pillar strength formulae sterilise.

Finite element simulation reproduced the rapid collapse of bord and pillar workings in the 2 Seam at a Witbank colliery, showing that progressive pillar deterioration triggers snap through of a strong sandstone plate in the overburden. Too little was known about the chosen collapse to back out a real pillar safety factor, so the calibration goal was not met.
