Create Sedimentological and Structural Models to Assist in Identifying Geological Features That Impact on Mining

Regional geology mapped in three dimensions from borehole data supplied by three mining groups, built for mine geologists and planners assessing seam disruption before layout design.

by Mark Grodner | December 2001

What this report found

A three dimensional model of the northern Witbank and Highveld coalfield was built from more than 1100 borehole logs, with strata sorted into 13 major groupings and surface topography taken from satellite elevation data. It runs on open source visualisation software rather than a commercial package. Delays limited coverage to about a quarter of the coalfield.

What this report found

Market prices are set out for sodium sulphate, sodium chloride, sodium nitrate, potassium nitrate and potassium chloride, in South Africa and abroad, as at early 2011, with Chinese supplier quotes alongside United States averages. The work was done to test whether salts recovered from mine water brine could be sold at a worthwhile price.

What this report found

Emission factors derived from measured South African seam gas data give simple models for methane released by underground mining, surface mining and coal after mining. Applied across the industry they put total methane emissions at 52 000 to 93 000 tons a year. The models follow the IPCC Tier 2 approach using country specific factors.

Flammability, corrosion resistance and environment by V Mhlawakhe.pdf

Laboratory work turning high ash coal fines into moulded building composites, comparing coal tar pitch against a silicone binder, with strength, burning, corrosion and leaching tests. For product developers.

What this report foundAir blowing converted coal tar into a pitch with 11.27% volatile matter and 87.68% fixed carbon, which bound high ash coal fines into structural composites.

What this report found

Air blowing converted coal tar into a pitch with 11.27% volatile matter and 87.68% fixed carbon, which bound high ash coal fines into structural composites. Compressive strengths ran from 106.58 to 344.71 MPa and flexural strengths from 48.75 to 159.30 MPa. Flammability was low across all composites and corrosion rates stayed below those of some commercial ceramic tiles.
