Fine Coal Dense-medium Cyclone Tests Conducted at Leeuwpan Coal Mine

GJ de Korte

200720 pages

Pilot dense medium cyclone testing on fine coal inside a working spiral plant at a Mpumalanga opencast mine, ending in a full scale plant design.

by GJ de Korte | January 2007

What this report found

Dense medium cyclones on the fine coal fraction lifted product yield well above the spiral circuit they were compared against and gave closer control of product quality. Cut point density control proved the hardest part of running the plant, medium properties being critical. Magnetic separator capacity had to match the duty, and a basement was needed to contain and recover medium spillage.

How it opens

Upon completion of the test work at Navigation, the Coaltech 2020 fine coal dense-medium plant was re-located to Leeuwpan Mine for the next phase of test work. The move of the plant was initially planned for the last quarter of 2005 but was delayed as a result of the commissioning of the new jig plant at Leeuwpan. The plant was transported to Leeuwpan during January 2006.

What this report found

Coal can feed products well beyond combustion. The study sets out routes to rare earth elements held in particular seams, building materials made with carbon fibre and carbon char, coal foam and graphene composites, carbon black and activated carbon, including a coal derived activated carbon reported to hold four times the gas of compressed natural gas at lower pressure.

What this report found

Market prices are set out for sodium sulphate, sodium chloride, sodium nitrate, potassium nitrate and potassium chloride, in South Africa and abroad, as at early 2011, with Chinese supplier quotes alongside United States averages. The work was done to test whether salts recovered from mine water brine could be sold at a worthwhile price.
