Sets out good practice for planning, implementing, monitoring and adaptively managing land rehabilitation at surface coal mines, with generic rehabilitation objectives, implementation actions and suggested relinquishment criteria for each component. It updates guidance first issued in 1981 and revised in 2007, reflecting later changes to South African rehabilitation legislation.

The first phase defined the problem, recorded the cleaning practices mines already use successfully, and built a structured database of mechanised platform options worth pursuing. High risk areas remain drives, take ups, snub and tail pulleys and transfer points.

Compared against concrete and gabions on cost, construction time, footprint, durability and safety, the Dongalock product proved cheaper and quicker to install in small and medium incised valley bottom wetlands, and needs no heavy plant, so local enterprises can build it. Concrete still suits large wetlands carrying high water velocities.
