Transformation of the Coal Mining Procurement Supply Chain

Review of preferential procurement and small supplier development at South African coal producers, based on interviews with procurement staff, suppliers and accreditation agencies, with recommendations for management.

by N Molefe & SGE Ashworth | December 2004

What this report found

Three modes of intervention were found in coal company procurement: preferential procurement rules, segmentation of goods and services by suitability for transformation, and support programmes for small suppliers. Progress stalled where supplier development was handled by staff carrying other duties, since work not tied to production loses time and has no target. The remedy proposed is procurement targets linked down through commercial and production management.

Guideline for Mine Closure Relinquishment Criteria

2023

Review of closure and relinquishment law in Australia, Canada and South Africa, with four mechanisms for reaching agreement compared. For closure planners and regulators.

What this report foundRelinquishment criteria follow from the agreed post-mining land use. The land use is the goal and the criteria measure whether it has been reached.

What this report found

Relinquishment criteria follow from the agreed post-mining land use. The land use is the goal and the criteria measure whether it has been reached. The guideline sets out a framework for approving those criteria at each mining phase, from the initial environmental management plan through to decommissioning, and compares South African practice with Australian, Canadian and international guidance.

Rehabilitation of Mined Land Irrigation of Pastures with Gypsiferous Mine water

2011

Pasture and animal production work on rehabilitated mine land under mine water irrigation, joining agronomy and animal science, for rehabilitation and closure planners.

What this report found

Grazing trials on tall fescue pasture irrigated with gypsiferous mine water on rehabilitated mined land, run over several seasons. The work covers steer stocking rates, dry matter intake by cattle, and the factors that control pasture quality and intake, among them nitrogen fertilisation, stage of growth, sward structure and grazing intensity. Findings are reported study by study.

What this report found

Electrical and electromagnetic ground surveys were run over a Waterberg profile with borehole logs and three dimensional seismic data as control, to test whether cheaper methods can match seismic reflection for locating coal and faults. Resistivity tomography at two electrode spacings, frequency and time domain electromagnetics, controlled source audio magnetotellurics and magnetics were all acquired. Results are preliminary.
