What this report found

Ants, termites, dung beetles and earthworms are known to improve soil health, but none had been deliberately applied as part of a mine reclamation strategy. Experimental and field scale studies asked whether dung beetles maintain their burial activity, and the soil services that follow, in soils typical of rehabilitated mine land, and set out recommendations for using them alongside existing methods.

The first phase defined the problem, recorded the cleaning practices mines already use successfully, and built a structured database of mechanised platform options worth pursuing. High risk areas remain drives, take ups, snub and tail pulleys and transfer points.

What this report found

Rehabilitated opencast soils carried pastures and cash crops, but compaction and cover soil depth set the ceiling on what they could produce. Only land with deep cover soils suited maize and sunflower, and deep ripping with regular tillage was needed. Bulk density standards were not met at the trial sites, which the review judged enough to have changed the results.
