Description

The BPG could be used as a reference document by relevant South African surface coal mines to review and enhance their Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the management of hot holes. Moreover, the BPG may also be used as a reference document by relevant international open cast coal mines. In both instances, efforts must be made to ensure that the different recommendations are applicable and relevant to specific site conditions. The BPG is for open cast coal mines, particularly those with hot holes and is intended to be used by mining personnel such as drilling crews, blasters, blasting assistants, blasting foremen, mine overseers and production managers.

What this report found

A regional monitoring programme was found to be viable and is proposed as a public private partnership covering air emissions, air quality and energy efficiency on the Mpumalanga Highveld. The assessment concluded that the worst health impacts fall on residential areas, driven by inefficient coal burning for heating and by housing sited close to large industry.

What this report found

Compared against concrete and gabions on cost, construction time, footprint, durability and safety, the Dongalock product proved cheaper and quicker to install in small and medium incised valley bottom wetlands, and needs no heavy plant, so local enterprises can build it. Concrete still suits large wetlands carrying high water velocities.
