Small Scale Coal Mining Guidelines
Plain language manual for newcomers to the coal industry, written for historically disadvantaged entrants with limited technical background and no route into the ownership and permitting process.
Sets out the steps to establish a small scale coal mine in South Africa, from mineral rights and regulatory approvals through finance, mining and processing choices, marketing, and environmental management and closure. The information a new entrant needs sits in many separate places, so the guideline draws it together from practitioners rather than from any single published source.

Agricultural Research on Rehabilitated Coal Mined Land (1994-2001) Conducted in Terms of the Kraai Van Niekerk Report
2001
Consolidated review of six field studies on highveld opencast rehabilitation, covering soil profiles, pasture performance, crop potential and soil water, for mine environmental staff and regulators.
What this report foundRehabilitated opencast soils carried pastures and cash crops, but compaction and cover soil depth set the ceiling on what they could produce.

Rehabilitated opencast soils carried pastures and cash crops, but compaction and cover soil depth set the ceiling on what they could produce. Only land with deep cover soils suited maize and sunflower, and deep ripping with regular tillage was needed. Bulk density standards were not met at the trial sites, which the review judged enough to have changed the results.
Unlocking obstacles to the commercialisation of eutectic freeze crystallisation
2022
Laboratory crystallisation cell tests on copper, brass, stainless steel and aluminium cooling plates in sodium sulphate solution, aimed at replacing mechanical scraping in brine treatment plants.
What this report foundHeat exchanger material governs how fast ice scale forms during eutectic freeze crystallisation of dilute brine.

Heat exchanger material governs how fast ice scale forms during eutectic freeze crystallisation of dilute brine. Induction time fell as thermal conductivity rose, so copper scaled first, while aluminium gave the lowest scaling rate because its low surface energy pushed ice crystallisation into the bulk. Stainless steel delayed onset but scaled heavily once nucleation started.
Upgrading of coal fines with a Centrifugal Concentrator
Bench and pilot testing of four centrifugal concentrator models on fine coal from two collieries, with operating variables that resisted correlation flagged for further work. For plant metallurgists.
What this report foundFour centrifugal concentrators all cut ash in fine coal, with desliming the decisive step.

Four centrifugal concentrators all cut ash in fine coal, with desliming the decisive step. The best unit took ash from 35.2% to 18.47% and sulphur from 0.68% to 0.36% in a single stage, raising calorific value from 23.78 to 26.16 MJ/kg. Pilot work reached 19% ash on thickener underflow and reconstituted spiral feed.
