Real-time Plant Efficiency Measurement

GJ de Korte

200230 pages

Assessment of the measurement and control equipment available to coal preparation plants, with recommendations for plant metallurgists on which instruments to add first.

What this report found

No single method gives a continuous, real time report on how a coal preparation plant is performing. Mass meters converted to yield values, on-line ash and moisture monitors, load cell chutes and automatic medium density control together supply most of what is needed. Measuring discard and slimes tonnages, particularly slimes disposal, remains the weakest point in plant accounting.

How it opens

When reference is made to the efficiency of a coal preparation plant or a specific coal processing unit, the sharpness of separation is usually inferred. The sharpness of separation reflects the ability of a unit, such as a dense-medium cyclone, to selectively separate coal and non-coal particles from each other based on the difference in their relative densities.

An Environmental Management Accounting Model for the South African Mining Industry

2008

Doctoral work comparing environmental cost practice at four South African mines and building a model from it, for environmental managers and finance staff in mining companies.

What this report found

Conventional cost accounting at the mines studied could not report on physical structure or materials flow, so environmental costs such as water, energy and consumables stayed hidden and chances to cut them were lost. Four case studies across different commodities and mining methods showed the same limitations. An environmental management accounting model is proposed to identify and allocate those costs.

A manual for authorisation of pitlakes as a closure option for South African coal mines

2021

A practical guide for coal mines and their consultants, built on earlier water research on pitlake viability, with South African examples from the Highveld, Waterberg and KwaZulu-Natal coal fields.

What this report foundSets out the authorisation route for leaving a pitlake as a closure landform, covering water use licensing, environmental authorisation and the wider...

What this report found

Sets out the authorisation route for leaving a pitlake as a closure landform, covering water use licensing, environmental authorisation and the wider legislative process. There is no single application that grants approval, and the route is long and partly duplicated, so several applications are required.

Review of Current and Expected Underground Coal Mining Methods and an Evaluation of the Best Practices Associated with These

What this report found

South African underground sections average about 60 000 t a month, against 130 000 to 160 000 t for single pass bolter miner units on continuous haulage, while the better sections target 1.4 to 1.6 Mt a year. Australian longwalls deliver 5 to 7 Mt a year from one face, compared with 3 to 5 Mt at the two local wall operations.
