What this report found

A three dimensional model of the northern Witbank and Highveld coalfield was built from more than 1100 borehole logs, with strata sorted into 13 major groupings and surface topography taken from satellite elevation data. It runs on open source visualisation software rather than a commercial package. Delays limited coverage to about a quarter of the coalfield.

No surface geophysical method can map individual bords and pillars at the depths typical of the Witbank coalfield, a limit the review attributed to physics rather than to technology, since the targets are small relative to their depth and conductive layers often lie above the seam. Borehole laser scanning remains the workable option, with sonar suited to flooded workings.

Dense medium cyclones on the fine coal fraction lifted product yield well above the spiral circuit they were compared against and gave closer control of product quality. Cut point density control proved the hardest part of running the plant, medium properties being critical. Magnetic separator capacity had to match the duty, and a basement was needed to contain and recover medium spillage.
