The Amenability of Some South African Bituminous Coals to Binderless Briquetting
Laboratory compaction work with testing of compressive, abrasion and water resistance, giving steam and metallurgical coal producers a basis for judging which fines can be agglomerated.
Nine bituminous coals from the Witbank, Waterberg and Soutpansberg coalfields all formed compacts without a binder, and the process worked better with coking coals. Reactive maceral content, free swelling index and Hardgrove grindability index governed briquette strength, with ash and kaolinite contents also contributing to bonding. Briquetting pressure, feed moisture and particle size distribution controlled the outcome.

Magnetic separator capacity had to match the duty, and a basement was needed to contain and recover medium spillage.

Dolerites in the study area differ in mineral content, geometry, thickness, grain size and degree of alteration. Plagioclase textures indicate fractionation at different depths in the crust for the Witbank and Sasolburg intrusions, and the olivine content points to separate magma sources for two of the sills. Fine crystalline dolerite, including chilled margins and bifurcations, alters most readily.
