Test work on a dry jig installed at a Balmoral site, covering coal sized below 50 mm and duff below 12 mm, for producers considering waterless beneficiation.

What this report found

A 30 tonne per hour pilot Allair dry jig upgraded run of mine coal to thermal coal specification, but could not effectively beneficiate finer duff. Cut point densities and EPM values matched other dry processing equipment, though the jig appeared to give better control of the parameters governing separation. Four tests ran on run of mine coal and two on duff.

Compressive strengths ran from 106.58 to 344.71 MPa and flexural strengths from 48.75 to 159.30 MPa. Flammability was low across all composites and corrosion rates stayed below those of some commercial ceramic tiles.

A stand-alone device was built that detects micro-seismicity within 100 m of the roof and raises an alarm when preset thresholds are exceeded, giving early warning of goafing. Input parameters proved not to vary with geotechnical setting. Man-made noise triggering false alarms remained the main obstacle, addressed by signal conditioning and sensor placement.

No surface geophysical method can map individual bords and pillars at the depths typical of the Witbank coalfield, a limit the review attributed to physics rather than to technology, since the targets are small relative to their depth and conductive layers often lie above the seam. Borehole laser scanning remains the workable option, with sonar suited to flooded workings.

Government and industry aeromagnetic data over the Witbank Coalfield were merged into one set of maps and GIS compatible files, and roughly 1200 dyke traces were interpreted from them. Purchase of a 200 m line spacing government survey removed the need for infill flying. One participating company valued advance knowledge of a single underground dyke at about R15 million.
