Pilot scale dense medium testing on fine coal at a Witbank colliery after the plant was moved from an earlier site, with sampling, efficiency and magnetite results for plant designers.

What this report found

The fine coal dense medium pilot plant was rebuilt at South Witbank Coal Mine and run on fine coal, with tests covering single, double and three stage processing, the effect of recirculating load, magnetite size and losses, separation efficiency and continuous operation. The fast screen could not deliver the required capacity and was replaced by dewatering cyclones to deslime the feed.

How it opens

The Coaltech 2020 fine coal dense-medium pilot plant was taken out of commission at Koornfontein Colliery on Friday, 7 June 2002. This was done to enable the plant to be dismantled and moved to South Witbank Coal Mine (SWC) where it was to be tested on fine coal from the No. 4 Seam. The plant was re-commissioned at SWC on 18 September 2002.

Air blowing converted coal tar into a pitch with 11.27% volatile matter and 87.68% fixed carbon, which bound high ash coal fines into structural composites. Compressive strengths ran from 106.58 to 344.71 MPa and flexural strengths from 48.75 to 159.30 MPa. Flammability was low across all composites and corrosion rates stayed below those of some commercial ceramic tiles.

Australian longwalls deliver 5 to 7 Mt a year from one face, compared with 3 to 5 Mt at the two local wall operations.
