Soil Covers for Backfilled Surface Coal Mine Pits and Coal Discard Facilities to Mitigate Acid Rock Drainage and Seepage Impacts Technical guideline The study focussed on soil covers that can provide a simple, cost-effective and passive source-directed measure to reduce high volumes of excess pit water and to mitigate acid generation and related seepage impacts from backfilled surface coal mine pits through land rehabilitation. This can result in cost savings to the mine on water treatment for a rehabilitated pit and during concurrent rehabilitation, while reducing the mine’s residual risk on seepage impacts and potential decanting of excess pit water.

It runs on open source visualisation software rather than a commercial package. Delays limited coverage to about a quarter of the coalfield.
