Multi-client Aeromagnetic Data Merge & Interpretation – Witbank Coalfield
Merged magnetic coverage and dyke interpretation across most Witbank mining and exploration ground, delivered as maps and GIS files for geologists planning around intrusions.
by S.J. du Plessis | February 2005
Government and industry aeromagnetic data over the Witbank Coalfield were merged into one set of maps and GIS compatible files, and roughly 1200 dyke traces were interpreted from them. Purchase of a 200 m line spacing government survey removed the need for infill flying. One participating company valued advance knowledge of a single underground dyke at about R15 million.

Sustainability in mining is still framed in neoclassical economic terms, measured by profit, shareholder value and growth, with social and environmental dimensions added in response to regulation. Six air quality and waste minimisation projects run over seven years were assessed against seven dimensions of the biosphere and fell well short. A collaborative model is proposed for a sector built on mining waste residues.
