A rating and ranking system was applied to South African coalfields and, separately, to the coal bearing countries elsewhere in the Southern African Development Community. The Waterberg ranked highest in South Africa and is the coalfield most worth detailed investigation as Witbank output declines. Botswana ranked highest among the other member states on contained resources and exploitation potential.

At 5 kg/ton on a feed of 29.34 per cent ash and 20.94 MJ/kg, flotation gave a clean coal of 11.76 per cent ash and 28.61 MJ/kg at 15.61 per cent mass yield. Calorific value rose with agitation speed and fell with binder dosage.

Even incomplete rehabilitation held carbon dioxide below about 1 kg per square metre a year, against over 100 on unrehabilitated ground and as much as 7 000 where combustion was active, though burning areas were small. Sulphur oxides, nitrogen oxides, ammonia and methane were low.
