Detection of Old Workings
Review of earlier geophysical work plus literature, setting out method selection and test site requirements ahead of field trials, for engineers assessing undermined ground before development.
by M van Schoor | February 2008
Microgravity, resistivity based methods including self potential, and time domain electromagnetics are identified as able to detect and delineate shallow old workings, with controlled source audio magnetotellurics useful below about 30 metres. How well each performs depends on target depth, the material filling the void and the overburden, and has never been quantified. Field trials were planned to close that gap.

Underground Trials of Seismic-counter and Goafing Characteristics in Pillar Extraction
2003
Underground trials at South African collieries of a seismic early warning instrument first developed for an Australian longwall, with analysis of how roof layers fail during pillar extraction.
What this report foundA stand-alone device was built that detects micro-seismicity within 100 m of the roof and raises an alarm when preset thresholds are exceeded, giving early...

A stand-alone device was built that detects micro-seismicity within 100 m of the roof and raises an alarm when preset thresholds are exceeded, giving early warning of goafing. Input parameters proved not to vary with geotechnical setting. Man-made noise triggering false alarms remained the main obstacle, addressed by signal conditioning and sensor placement.
The impact of cattle grazing on rehabilitated land
Two annual surveys of species composition, biomass and soil sampling inside and outside fenced plots on rehabilitated pasture at an opencast colliery near Ogies, with benchmark sites for comparison.
What this report foundGrazing pressure on the rehabilitated block ran at roughly three times the estimated carrying capacity.

Grazing pressure on the rehabilitated block ran at roughly three times the estimated carrying capacity. The sward was dominated by low quality grasses with a high proportion of bare ground and a raised erosion risk. Fenced exclosures over one year changed the abundance of a few species, but the vegetation showed no clear direction of recovery.
Identify Remnant Coal Deposits for Potential Exploitation by Small Business Developments
2002
Screening of near surface remnant coal for small scale miners in Mpumalanga, with a map of candidate areas and of ground already worked out.

Shallow coal suitable for small scale opencast working was mapped in the northern Witbank and Highveld coalfields, using a limit of 30 m from surface to the top of the first seam. Most outcrop areas examined proved already mined out, and depth to the top seam increases southwards, though some ground remains available. Obtaining resource data was the main obstacle.
