Relationship Between Remuneration, Employee Morale, Stress and the Subsequent Impact on Safety, Productivity and Profitability.

2006

Study of pay and bonus structures on South African coal mines across management, staff and operator grades, for human resources practitioners and mine managers reviewing incentive schemes.

What this report foundBuilds on an earlier productivity audit that identified fluctuating bonuses and incentives as an influence on output, safety and employee stress.

What this report found

Builds on an earlier productivity audit that identified fluctuating bonuses and incentives as an influence on output, safety and employee stress. The work examines how salaries, production bonuses and safety bonuses are graded and distributed across employee categories, how workers perceive that distribution, and whether incentives in practice motivate production and safe working. Stress and morale are treated as measures of wellbeing.

Petrochemical Characterization of Dolerites and Their Influence on Coal in the Witbank Highveld Coalfield, South Arica

Johannes Jochemus du Plessis

2008

Masters study of dyke and sill intrusions at collieries in the Witbank and Highveld coalfields, using thin section petrography and X-ray fluorescence, for exploration geologists.

What this report foundDolerites in the study area differ in mineral content, geometry, thickness, grain size and degree of alteration.

What this report found

Dolerites in the study area differ in mineral content, geometry, thickness, grain size and degree of alteration. Plagioclase textures indicate fractionation at different depths in the crust for the Witbank and Sasolburg intrusions, and the olivine content points to separate magma sources for two of the sills. Fine crystalline dolerite, including chilled margins and bifurcations, alters most readily.

Audit and Diagnostic Assessment of Productivity in Continuous Miner Sections

SGE Ashworth

2003

Mine level study of the human and social influences on continuous miner section output, using interviews, focus groups, observation and work study at participating collieries, for mine managers.

What this report foundSection performance was limited by the will and motivation of the workforce, not by equipment, layout or technical competence, all of which were found sound.

What this report found

Section performance was limited by the will and motivation of the workforce, not by equipment, layout or technical competence, all of which were found sound. Team based bonus payments were the strongest motivator and reinforced cooperation across shifts and functions, but dependence on bonus income to meet monthly expenses turned it into a source of stress. Recognition in front of colleagues and family motivated strongly.
