The dust you cannot see
The coal dust that damages lungs is the fraction too fine to see. We funded the work that keeps the measurements honest and the masks worn, ending in the best practice guideline published in 2025.
What you measure badly, you manage badly
Respirable dust is the fraction of coal dust fine enough to reach deep lung tissue. Exposure is managed through sampling, and sampling is a chain: pumps, filters, handling, weighing, records. A weak link anywhere and the number that decides whether a section is safe is wrong. On the personal protection side, disposable masks only work when they are worn, and worn properly, which on a hot shift underground is a behaviour problem as much as an equipment one.
Audit the chain, then write the doctrine
M2019-2 tackled the human end: how to get more effective use out of disposable dust masks in real conditions. M2020-4 audited the integrity of respirable dust sample processes on coal mines end to end, reporting in July 2021 on where the measurement chain bends. The programme closed with the Guideline for Best Practice for Respirable Dust Sample Processes, delivered with Latona and published in March 2025: one document that carries the whole chain, from pump calibration to paperwork.
Numbers worth acting on
Dust control decisions are only as good as the measurements underneath them. The audit showed the industry where its sampling chain leaked; the guideline now standardises the fix; and the mask work moved protection from issued to actually worn. Lung disease from coal dust develops over decades, which means the benefit of this work arrives quietly, in the cases that never present.
