Coaltech and its programme partners, among them the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research and Eskom, have formally initiated Phase 1 of the High Efficiency Low Emission Circulating Fluidised Bed Clean Coal Technology Localisation Programme.
The initiative supports the direction set out in the Integrated Resource Plan 2025, which sets out how South Africa intends to secure energy supply, improve the performance of the national electricity system and modernise the generating fleet.
The IRP 2025 holds that coal remains an important component of the national energy mix in the short to medium term, and stresses the need to improve the efficiency and reliability of the existing coal fired fleet.
