The problem
The spark nobody survives
When a continuous miner’s picks strike rock, they spark. When the seam releases methane at the same point, the section is one bad moment from an explosion. For decades the industry managed that moment with ventilation rules of thumb. Nobody had pinned down exactly how ignitions start at the cutting head, or what specifically stops them.

The research
Follow the gas to the pick
Phase one investigated how and where cutting-head ignitions actually occur, and what the rest of the world did about them. The phases that followed optimised methane control in the heading, then pushed monitoring technology closer to the pick, where the risk lives. Phases four and five delivered the practical end: a modification protocol for the machines themselves, a graphic checklist a section crew can hold, and the final report that ties five phases into one line of defence.

The impact
Documents a miner can hold
Research that ends as a report on a shelf protects nobody. This programme ended as working paper: the modification protocol and the ventilation checklist are used at section level, and the monitoring work moved sensing toward the cutting zone. Underground coal mining will never be safe the way an office is safe. It is safer than it was, and this is part of why.
