Description

Coal waste, including fines and fly ash, can be safely and effectively incorporated into asphalt mixes without compromising mechanical or environmental performance. Asphalt containing coal waste demonstrates comparable or improved strength, durability, and resistance to moisture damage, while delivering cost and sustainability benefits. This approach supports circular economy principles by reducing waste, lowering reliance on natural aggregates, and improving material efficiency in road construction.

Dust masks worn by load haul dump operators passed 200 mg of filter loading in an average of 1.7 hours, and continuous miner, shuttle car and roofbolt operators reached the same point within two to five hours. Every mask failed laboratory fit testing. An eight hour service life is too long.

Ants, termites, dung beetles and earthworms are known to improve soil health, but none had been deliberately applied as part of a mine reclamation strategy. Experimental and field scale studies asked whether dung beetles maintain their burial activity, and the soil services that follow, in soils typical of rehabilitated mine land, and set out recommendations for using them alongside existing methods.

What this report found

A 30 tonne per hour pilot Allair dry jig upgraded run of mine coal to thermal coal specification, but could not effectively beneficiate finer duff. Cut point densities and EPM values matched other dry processing equipment, though the jig appeared to give better control of the parameters governing separation. Four tests ran on run of mine coal and two on duff.
