Demonstrate the efficiency of UAV-GPR for assessment of rehabilitation sites and detection of subsurface cavities
Field trials at two South African collieries comparing drone mounted ground penetrating radar against ground based surveys, for measuring rehabilitation soil thickness and locating shallow voids. For rehabilitation teams.
By Michael van Schoor | 2023
Ground based radar mapped rehabilitation soil profiles well enough to replace much of the auger sampling normally needed, and a 100 MHz system picked out anomalies at about 5 to 6 m depth that were likely old mining voids and related subsidence. Penetration below roughly 6 m needs lower frequencies, which cost resolution and require larger antennas.

Laboratory testing showed coal specimen strength rising linearly with width to height ratio and falling exponentially with specimen size, the size effect becoming insignificant beyond about 2 m diameter. The slope of that relationship was the same for coals from different mines, while the intercept varied with specimen size.

A three dimensional model of the northern Witbank and Highveld coalfield was built from more than 1100 borehole logs, with strata sorted into 13 major groupings and surface topography taken from satellite elevation data. It runs on open source visualisation software rather than a commercial package. Delays limited coverage to about a quarter of the coalfield.
