Dolerites in the study area differ in mineral content, geometry, thickness, grain size and degree of alteration. Plagioclase textures indicate fractionation at different depths in the crust for the Witbank and Sasolburg intrusions, and the olivine content points to separate magma sources for two of the sills. Fine crystalline dolerite, including chilled margins and bifurcations, alters most readily.

The best unit took ash from 35.2% to 18.47% and sulphur from 0.68% to 0.36% in a single stage, raising calorific value from 23.78 to 26.16 MJ/kg. Pilot work reached 19% ash on thickener underflow and reconstituted spiral feed.

The higher value reflected surface drainage towards the pit centre and eroded topsoil; the lower one, a deep pit floor with well compacted spoil and intact cover.
